Sin Atonement: Jesus Blood vs 21 Offerings

blood atone

FOR PAUL: Jesus sacrificed himself on the Cross, shed his blood to atone ('pay') for our Sins.

When Paul writes to the Romans, he writes of the problem of sin. Paul summaries the issue as follows:

  1. The source of sin is Satan's lies
  2. Jesus sacrificed himself for our sins
  3. In the blood of Jesus is sin atonement and salvation

Shedding of blood is important Apostle Paul
Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood. For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
HEBR 9:18-19
Blood of bulls & goats is not enough Apostle Paul Paul opposed the Jewish rituals and believed the sacrificial rituals were inadequate.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
HEBR 10:4
Therefore, blood of Jesus is required Apostle Paul Paul taught Jesus was the 'final & ultimate' blood sacrifice who took on the sins of all those who believed in him. His teachings were in direct opposition to established Jewish customs and traditions.
And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.
HEBR 9:22
Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:

How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
HEBR 9:12-14
The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
1COR 10:16
In the blood of Jesus, lies forgiveness of Sin Apostle Paul
For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
HEBR 9:26
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
HEBR 9:28

FOR JESUS: As a Torah-observant Jew, Sin was atoned ('paid for') in upto 21 different sacrificial offerings or ways.

In the Old Testament, the shedding of blood in animal sacrifices is significant. The sprinkled blood is a 'covering' for sin.

The life of the animal was poured out in death as a substitute for the people. The animal's life was given up on behalf of the lives of people. Judgment was carried out by transferring the sin of the people to the animal sacrifice.

1. Lamb Burnt Offering *
Now this is that which thou shalt offer upon the altar; two lambs of the first year day by day continually. The one lamb thou shalt offer in the morning; and the other lamb thou shalt offer at even:
EXOD 29:38-39
2. Bull/Bullock Sin Offering
And he shall kill the bullock before the Lord: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
LEVI 1:5
3. Sheep Sin Offering
And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.
LEVI 1:10
4. Goat Burnt Offering
And if his offering be of the flocks, namely, of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt sacrifice; he shall bring it a male without blemish.
LEVI 1:10
5. Turtledove Sin Offering
But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.
LEVI 5:11
6. Pigeon Sin Offering
But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.

7. Blood of Animal Sin Offering
And he shall kill the bullock before the Lord: and the priests, Aaron's sons, shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood round about upon the altar that is by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
LEVI 1:5
Besides animal sacrifice, other items were offered. These may not have atoned for all sins due to their lower value, but were valid sacrifices according to scripture.

8. Fine Flour Grain Offering
But if he be not able to bring two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, then he that sinned shall bring for his offering the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering; he shall put no oil upon it, neither shall he put any frankincense thereon: for it is a sin offering.
LEVI 5:11
9. Grain Grain Offering
In this way the priest will make atonement for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest, as in the case of the grain offering.
LEVI 5:13
10. Bread (Leavened) Grain Offering
Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.
LEVI 7:13
11. Bread/Wafers (Unleavened) Grain Offering
If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers [bread] anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.
LEVI 7:12
12. Oil Grain Offering
If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers [bread] anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.
LEVI 7:12
13. Cake (Unleavened) Grain Offering
If he offer it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mingled with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes mingled with oil, of fine flour, fried.
LEVI 7:12
14. Incense Grain Offering
And Moses said unto Aaron, Take a censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and put on incense, and go quickly unto the congregation, and make an atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from the LORD; the plague is begun.
NUMB 16:46
15. Shekels/Money Peace Offering

22. Blood of Man Sin Offering In the Jewish religion, there is no evidence a human being was ever sacrificed to atone for sin, or would be in the future.

Human sacrifices were a common practise amongst the pagan religions.

* There are four types of offering: Burnt, Grain, Peace and Sin. Each type of offering was atonement for different reasons.
