Muhammad - His Personality & Character

1. Honesty Muhammad was known as Al-Amin (The Trustworthy). Before prophethood, rival tribes trusted him to resolve a major dispute regarding who would place the sacred Black Stone into the Kaaba. Even during heavy persecution, his fiercest enemies continued to leave their valuables with him for safekeeping because they knew he would never steal. By the star when it descends, your companion [Muhammad] has not strayed, nor has he erred, nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. QURAN 53:1
2. Humility Muhammad lived a simple, austere life, mending his own clothes and helping with household chores. According to his wife Aisha, he would repair his own shoes, sew his garments, and milk his ewes. He strictly forbade his followers from standing up out of respect when he entered a room, preferring to sit unaffectedly on the floor with the poorest members of the community. Say, 'I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God.' QURAN 18:110
3. Mercy and Forgiveness Muhammad showed deep compassion and pardoned opponents even when he had the power to punish them. During the peaceful Conquest of Mecca, instead of seeking vengeance against the Quraysh tribe who had spent over two decades torturing his followers and waging wars, he issued a blanket amnesty, declaring: "Go, for you are free." And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds. QURAN 21:107
4. Generosity Muhammad did not hoard wealth and freely gave to the poor, widows, and orphans. He lived on meager rations - often passing weeks without a fire being lit for cooking in his home. He routinely gave away gifts, food, and charity to those in need before ensuring his own family was fed. And He found you poor and made [you] self-sufficient. So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. And as for the petitioner, do not repel [him]. QURAN 93:8
5. Bravery Muhammad stood steadfast through heavy persecution and led his followers with calm courage. During the Battle of Hunayn, when a sudden ambush caused a large portion of his army to panic and retreat, he remained unmoved, riding his mount directly toward the enemy forces while calling out to rally his men back to safety. There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often." [Revealed during the intense siege of the Battle of the Trench] QURAN 33:21
6. Patience and Forbearance Muhammad endured personal insults and physical attacks with profound calmness (Hilm). When he traveled to the city of Ta'if to preach, the residents stoned him until his shoes filled with blood. When an angel offered to crush the city between two mountains in retribution, he refused and instead prayed for their future generations to be guided. So be patient, [O Muhammad], as were those of determination among the messengers and do not be impatient for them. QURAN 46:35
7. Justice Muhammad enforced the law fairly, regardless of social status, lineage, or religion. When a noblewoman from an influential tribe committed theft, some companions tried to intercede to save her from punishment. He firmly rejected the plea, famously stating that even if his own daughter Fatima were to commit a crime, he would uphold justice equally against her. O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. QURAN 4:135
8. Gentleness and Compassion Muhammad maintained an incredibly gentle disposition, especially toward children and the vulnerable. His servant Anas ibn Malik testified that he served the Prophet for ten years, and during that entire decade, the Prophet never once yelled at him, scolded him, or asked him harshly why he did or did not do a task. So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. QURAN 3:159
