In “Behind the Lines”, Mother Jones senior reporter Shane Bauer reports from Syria on America’s role in one of the 21st century’s bloodiest conflicts. A year in the making, this video series follows Bauer as he goes inside an abandoned prison in the capital of ISIS’ would-be caliphate, hunts for clues about the devastating US-led bombing of Raqqa as forensics crews scour the wreckage for forgotten victims, and travels to a battlefront where a proxy battle between the United States and Russia is fueled by oil and gas fields. Bauer’s investigation explores a civil war that has drawn American jihadists, anarchists, CIA agents, and special forces to a battlefield of shifting allegiances, wary allies, and horrific civilian casualties.
