Jesus vs Isaac - The Sacrifice

Abraham sacrificed Isaac, and God sacrificed his son Jesus

Christians believe the Father sacrificed his begotten son, Jesus Christ. They point to Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac as evidence that Jesus is God. The table below explores this claim.

Isaac	Jesus
When Abraham's son, Isaac grew to be a young boy, God tested Abraham by commanded he offer his son as a burnt sacrifice. Though filled with sadness and grief, Abraham obeyed God's command without hesitation and took Isaac to the mountains. Suddenly, in the last moment, a ram appeared in place of Isaac. Abraham sacrificed the ram*	Jesus was arrested and sentenced by Pontius Pilate to be scourged, and finally crucified by the Romans. Jesus was stripped of his clothing and beaten before being crucified on the cross. After Jesus' death, one soldier pierced him with a spear to be certain he had died. On the third day, Jesus rose up and appeared to his disciples*
Sacrifice
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. GENESIS 22:2 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son HEBREWS 11:17 Isaac is the only son	For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Offered on Mountain, hill
And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of. GENESIS 22:2 Isaac was to be sacrificed on a mountain	And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? MATTHEW 21:10 No mountain is mentioned in this verse
Accompanied by ass (donkey)
And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him GENESIS 22:3 Abraham took an ass to the sacrifice place	Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass MATTHEW 21:5 Jesus came to Jerusalem sitting on an ass
Accompanied by two men

Three day journey/tomb
Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. GENESIS 22:4 On the third day, Abraham... Wood on his back
And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. GENESIS 22:6 Abraham put wood on Isaac's back	And he bearing his cross (wooden) went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha: JOHN 19:17 Jesus carried the cross on his back
Lamb
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. GENESIS 22:8 Abraham said God will provide a Lamb	The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world. Offered on wood
And they came to the place which God had told him of; and Abraham built an altar there, and laid the wood in order, and bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar upon the wood. GENESIS 22:9 The son, Isaac laid on the wooden altar	And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. Thorns
And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. GENESIS 22:13 A ram appeared in a thicket of thorns	And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe JOHN 19:2 Jesus made to wear a crown of thorns
Seed multiplied
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; GENESIS 22:17 Abraham's seed will be multiplied (increase)	But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: JOHN 1:12 Believers in Jesus will become sons of God
Parting of ways
So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba. GENESIS 22:19 Abraham parted from the young men	And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost. Wife for son
And Abraham said unto his eldest servant of his house, that ruled over all that he had, Put, I pray thee, thy hand under my thigh: And I will make thee swear by the LORD, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth, that thou shalt not take a wife unto my son of the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell: But thou shalt go unto my country, and to my kindred, and take a wife unto my son Isaac. GENESIS 24:2-4 Servant was to find Isaac a wife	Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
