Codex Sinaiticus & Vaticanus - Corruption in the KJV Bible verses

Codex Vaticanus, a manuscript dated 325-350 AD, contains the earliest complete copy of the New Testament Bible.

The table below lists the King James Bible (KJV) verses that conflict with the relatively recent Biblical manuscript discoveries, the Codex Sinaiticus and Codex Vaticanus.

King James (KJV) Popular
Published in 1611 by the Church of England, the King James Bible (KJV) is an English translation of the Christian Bible. Under King James I, 47 translators used the Textus Receptus ('Majority text') manuscripts for their English Bible. The earliest manuscript used was the Codex Alexandrinus dated to 400 AD. Since 1611, older, more accurate Bible manuscripts have been discovered; the Codex Sinaiticus and Vaticanus. The books of the King James Version include the 39 books of the Old Testament, an intertestamental section containing 14 books of the Apocrypha, and the 27 books of the New Testament. Codex Vaticanus Oldest Bible
Codex Vaticanus is regarded as the oldest extant manuscript of the Greek Bible dated to 325-350 AD. Vaticanus is named after its place of conservation in the Vatican Library. In the 19th century, Bible scholars studying the Codex Vaticanus realized the texts differed significantly from the Latin Vulgate ('Textus Receptus'). Vaticanus may have been one of the 50 Bibles commissioned by Emperor Constantine in 331 AD. W Codex_Vaticanus

Codex Sinaiticus Old Bible
Codex Sinaiticus is an ancient, handwritten copy of the Greek Bible dated to 330-360 AD. Discovered in 1850 by Constantin von Tischendorf, a German evolutionist theologian, at St. Catherine's Monastery at Mount Sinai. Sinaiticus is an Alexandrian text-type manuscript written on parchment. Currently stored in the British Library, London. Sinaiticus is an invaluable resource for critical studies of biblical text. Eusebius of Caesarea (263-339 AD), reports that Mark 16:9–20 are likely spurious and do not appear in the more 'accurate' copies of the Gospel of Mark. Jerome (ca. ad 345–420) remarks Mark (16:9-20) verses were missing in most copies of the scriptures.

OMITTED	RSV Vaticanus lk22-43 Bruce Metzger thinks Luke 22:43-44 are not original to Luke, and probably 'added from an early source, oral or written, of extra-canonical traditions concerning the life and passion of Jesus.' Raymond Brown argues that a weak Jesus in Luke 22:43-44 ostensibly contradicted Greco-Roman expectations of courage and bravery before death.

Clement of Alexandria cites: 'For there are three that bear witness, the spirit, and the water, and the blood, and these three are one'.

Not a single church father writing in Greek cited these verses in defense of the Trinity theology, surprising, as 1 John 5:7b-8a is the only explicit Trinitarian formula in the entire NT.

Tertullian, Cyprian and Augustine reveal that 1 John 5:7b–8a was not in the earliest fragmentary Old Latin versions of the NT.

Jerome's Vulgate did not contain 1 John 5:7b–8a either.

The earliest Greek manuscript to contain 1 John 5:7b–8a is a 10th century manuscript in which these verses are added as part of an alternative reading.

From 5,400 known Greek manuscripts of the NT, only 8 contain 1 John 5:7b–8a ('Johannine Comma') from 15th or 16th century.

Erasmus (1466-1536) omitted 1 John 5:7b–8a from his first two editions of the Greek NT: 'I shall merely say that I examined at various times more than seven manuscripts and did not find in any of them what we read in our texts. If I had come across one manuscript that had the reading found in our texts, I would have added the phrase missing in the others on the strength of that one. Since that did not happen I did the only thing possible and indicated what was lacking in the Greek texts'.

Summary

The Codex Sinaiticus and Vaticanus are the oldest, complete Bibles available today.

When compared to the King James (KJV), or any other Bible version, many conflicting and 'confusing' attestations and omissions are presented.

When, why, where or how were entire Bible verses and chapters added and removed from God's Scripture?

It is beyond the scope of this article to explore the above questions. Modern Biblical scholarship document and acknowledge the above textual modifications, but would explain these as textual embellishments and not textual corruption.
